Basic tips for making better short films through Instagram

November 6, 2013

In this post we present some basic tips on how to make better videos, for the Instagram category of the We Art Water Film Festival.

In this second edition of the We Art Water Film Festival, the commitment of the We Are Water Foundation with regards to innovation is proven once again, with the selection of Instagram as the third category. The challenge in this category is to make a film with a duration between 10 and 15 seconds focussed on raising awareness on the access to drinking water. Instagram Video, is available for both iOS and Android mobile devices. You may find more information about the app here.

Whether you have made up your mind, or you are still deciding in which category to participate, here you may find a few basic tips on how to make a short film via Instagram. We hope you find this useful and inspiring.

1. A film look

Instagram used film professionals who work in color correction, to create its 13 'film-quality' filters. Some examples are: Dogpatch, Helena and Ginza. You can learn more about the filters here.

The work of Fabien Baron is an inspiring reference on how to use the different filters.

2. With or without sound

If your goal is to speak while shooting your video, you can use a headphone with microphone for recording better sound. But a common mistake among the filmmakers who use Instagram is the shooting of very long scenes, forgetting that the sound is also being recorded. In order to make a mute video or clip, you must press your phone's microphone with your finger.

3. Stabilize the videos

Although the Instagram application includes a video stabilizer, and this is very useful for capturing clips with movement, we recommend using a tripod or similar. Currently, there are plenty of available options to choose from, for both iPhone and Android most universal models.

4. Video editing applications

Instagram offers a wide range of tools to create amazing videos, but it is very likely that you need to get an external app to edit or to work on some additional effects. We list only a few of them:

For iOS (iPhone/ iPad): Splice, SloPro or Videolicious, and WeVideo is also available for Android.

These basic tips are only a small sample of how to make the most of Instagram Video, but there are many more. Even though from the Foundation we will soon share many more useful tips about the app, do not stop investigating. There exist thousands of forums and online communities where you can find the most creative tricks.
