Billa orphaned at 9, never saw life in its beautiful form. For him it was all about pain and responsibilities greater than his age. He had a great aptitude for studies but without school fees it was all a waste. So he left the school and moved on. Billa found a hope in Wular and harped on a new journey. He scavenges Asia’s largest fresh water lake Wular daily for plastic trash. He sells whatever he collects and feeds his family. It’s ironic how the plastic that pollutes and chokes the Wular turn into a savior. It’s a symbiotic relationship. Regardless of all the hardships, Billa faces his fate; same way the Wular is fighting every day to survive the man made destruction. Billa at his own level protects Wular Lake by cleansing it from the garbage; in return he earns his living! He is making a redeeming difference to the Wular, something that the society in Kashmir has generally overlooked.
