Sunkwa is a large river situated at Pokuase, a suburb of Accra, Ghana. A population of about 1 million people who leaves at Pokuase, its environs and beyond drinks from this river. Consumers are compelled to drink from "Sunkwa" because its the only source of water for the people who lives there. Natives of the town, including water tankers who come from afar, to this river to fetch some for their clients, household chores and other stuff. Apart from people fetching from this river to drink, so many unsanitary activities takes place on "Sunkwa" everyday, making the river dirty and harmful for use. Such activities includes, dumping of refuse in the river and along the river banks,fishing, people washing their feet and doing their laundry in the river, and also people connecting their sewage straight into the river. Regardless of all these unsanitary conditions that goes on, on Sunkwa, people still fetch from it but at a reduced number since lately there has been recorded cases of people getting diarrhea and skin diseases as a result of drinking from it.
